How to Layer ZO Skin Health Products - Morning and Evening Guide

By ZO® Skin Health

A skincare regimen is made up of multiple products. For skincare newbies, it can be daunting to simply figure out which products are best suited for their skin’s needs, much less knowing the order in which they need to be applied

At ZO, we sell regimes not just products because every product has a specific role and function within the regime to help you achieve Skin Health Restoration. We can tailor regimes to any skin type, age, or ethnicity. ZO Skin Health is able to meet everyone where they current are in their current skin health journey and provide you with a tailored regime so everyone can achieve skin health restoration: your skin in the most healthiest state.

ZO® Skin Health provides comprehensive solutions for creating and maintaining healthy skin for anyone regardless of age, ethnicity, unique skin condition or skin type. A ZO® regimen is built around the research + findings of Dr. Zein Obagi’s approach to skin health restoration. Our 3-step approach offers guidance on when to apply certain products.

Getting Skin Ready® is the first essential step to any regimen, consisting of the following:

Cleanse — wash away impurities, makeup and other debris on the surface of the skin.

Exfoliate — slough off dead skin cells to reveal instantly smoother skin. Exfoliation can also help improve product penetration, to enable more corrective products, such as serums and retinols, to work optimally.

Tone — minimize surface oils and clarify pores.

After Getting Skin Ready®, the skin is prepped to receive the next steps of a regimen. Prevent + Correct is a broad category that consists of solutions that help address skin concerns, such environmental damage, lines + wrinkles, skin discoloration and the appearance of redness. This step typically consists of 2-3 products but can vary depending on your skin’s needs and from the input from your skin health professional.

Next-generation Daily Power Defense and new Illuminating AOX Serum and are recommended to follow the Getting Skin Ready® step. They are comprehensively formulated with ZO’s exclusive technologies to provide advanced environmental protection + defend against premature signs of aging, which can benefit every regimen. Illuminating AOX Serum is indicated for AM use and Daily Power Defense for AM/PM.

What follows is determined by what your skin needs, and the order and specific products should be determined by your skin health professional.

It’s important to note that ZO® has four high-molecular weight products with slower absorption times: 10% Vitamin C Self-Activating, Growth Factor Serum Radical Night Retinol and Pigment Control + Brightening Crème.  These products should be applied last for optimal product benefits to be achieved.

Prior to sunscreen, any Supplementary product can be applied. Eye, Hydrating + Calming and Body products can enhance the results of any regimen.

Protect is the final step that should never be overlooked. ZO’s Triple-Spectrum Protection® sunscreen products help shield the skin from the damaging effects of  not only UVA and UVB rays but blue light and infrared-A rays as well.

Common ZO Layering Mistakes to Avoid

The sequence matters as much as the products. These are the most common errors that reduce efficacy or cause unnecessary irritation.

1. Skipping Getting Skin Ready® completely. Healthy skin starts with the basics. It’s designed to bring skin back to its most healthy, balanced state for a clear complexion, regardless of skin type.

Do not skip preparing the skin to receive your regime treatment products and improve overall product efficacy.

2. Applying heavier products before lighter ones Thicker, slower-absorbing formulas – including the four high-molecular-weight ZO products – create a physical barrier that prevents subsequent products from penetrating. Lighter serums go first; high-MW products go last within the Prevent+Correct step.

3. Stacking too many actives in one session Using AHAs, BHAs, and retinol in the same evening session is a common cause of avoidable barrier disruption. On retinol nights, remove other exfoliating actives from the sequence unless your physician has specifically advised otherwise.

4. Skipping SPF in the morning Vitamin C, retinol, and exfoliating actives all increase photosensitivity. Broad-spectrum SPF 40 or higher is the final, mandatory step in every AM system, regardless of cloud cover or time indoors. UV exposure is cumulative.

Frequently Asked Questions

The ZO system follows a consistent layering sequence: Step 1 Getting Skin Ready® first (cleanse, exfoliate, tone), then Step 2 Prevent + Correct products, including Daily Power Defense® or IAOX followed by your customized Prevent + Correct treatment products. You can always add Supplementary products (eye, hydration, body), and finally SPF in the morning for your Triple Spectrum Skin Protection®.

Yes. Daily Power Defense is a barrier-strengthening antioxidant serum that works in conjunction with retinol – it does not conflict with it. In the PM system, apply Daily Power Defense before retinol, allowing it to absorb before continuing the sequence. This supports the skin barrier through the cellular adjustment that retinol drives.

Illuminating AOX Serum is designated for AM use. Sunscreen is AM only. Daily Power Defense and retinol can be used AM or PM, though physician guidance on your specific system determines what's appropriate for your skin. When in doubt, find a physician near you for a personalised system recommendation.
